IBS and what to do about it!

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Do You Recognise These Symptoms?

Bloated stomach, tight clothes, gas and flatulence, pain, diarrhoea, constipation, irritability, constant lack of energy, low sex drive?

Do any of the above sound familiar to you? My guess is they are part of your everyday life.

You wake up in the morning feeling unrefreshed but with a flat stomach. This will be the only time of the day where you feel your stomach is the way it should be and obviously can be, yet even now you don't feel on top of the world.

50% of clients at the Colonic Hydrotherapy Clinic present with one or more of the above symptoms. Many clients have all the above symptoms.

They often arrive after many months or years of attending their General Practitioner for help and treatment, and then often trying many self help approaches before coming for colonic irrigation as a final rather than a first step. How many years of IBS symptoms could potentially have been avoided?

Many, many clients describe food intolerances where within seconds their symptoms can appear as if from nowhere.

Gone are the days of wearing close fitting swimwear or sexy evening wear. The only time these would fit comfortably and feel good would be on waking in the morning (if you are lucky).

This is a condition most often (though not exclusively) seen in females of all ages, from 18 - 82 (the total age range of my clients), and see often but less frequently in men.

Pain killers and anti-spasmodic treatments from the doctor undoubtedly work for some clients in the treatment of the sometimes dreadful pain, yet very little works for the bloating, discomfort and host of other symptoms. Often there is very little sympathy and you can often be treated as a bit of a malingerer or hypochondriac.

Nothing could be further from the truth. This collection of related IBS symptoms is 100% real.

Do you know what is almost always found throughout the course of treatment offered?

Initially, there is always a large build up of old fecal matter in the large intestine.

There is always a large amount (sometimes VERY large amount) of gas present during a bloated phase, which is reduced visibly during the treatment with the stomach reducing in size before our very eyes.

There is almost always very little natural muscular action of the large intestine during treatment, unlike other groups of clients,

and there is almost always a noticable reduction in sexual energy and drive and reduced sensation in the whole of the pelvic region together with a lack of physical and psychological energy generally.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Also called spastic colon, it is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[ In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements. Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI) or a stressful life event or may begin at onset of maturity without any other medical indicators.

Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments which attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important.

Several conditions may present as IBS including

  • celiac disease,
  • mild infections,
  • parasitic infections like giardiasis,
  • several inflammatory bowel diseases,
  • functional chronic constipation, and
  • chronic functional abdominal pain.

In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown.

The most common theory is that Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system.

IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue and other symptoms, and it increases a patient's medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism.

Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer's life.
