Hemorrhoids
(The Person Next To You Probably Has Them Too)!

Did you know - Hemorrhoids are believed to have caused Napoleon to sit side-saddle?

You may have hemorrhoids right now and not even know it because they can remain inside the rectum and not be felt or seen.

I know, I used to suffer from them myself :-))

Painful Hemorrhoids They are one of the most common ailments known and are a problem for both men and women.

Affecting over half of the population - meaning millions of Americans currently suffer from them.

They are usually not dangerous or life threatening.

The term haemorrhoids often called piles, , refers to a condition in which the clusters of veins around the anus or lower rectum are swollen and inflamed.

They can be so distressing to a person, that even the horrific operations of bygone centuries(the operations aren't so great these days either), were considered worthwhile by the sufferer, to try and stop the distress they were causing.

Hemorrhoid Types

There are two types of hemorrhoids,

Internal

And external.

Both types are common.

While both types differ in their locations where they are formed, they both cause serious pain and discomfort in varying degrees.

You may have both types of hemorrhoids simultaneously (mixed). All types are progressive stages of internal hemorrhoids.

While some types can clear up by themselves after minimal treatment, other types such as bleeding piles are far more serious.

Piles can occur in several forms:

  • Internal,

  • Prolapsed internal - this is an internal hemorrhoid that begins to bulge through the anus.

  • External,

  • Thrombosed external hemorrhoid,

  • And anal fissure.

In other words the question starts at whether yours are internal or external hemorrhoids?

And then what stage they have reached.

    Internal Hemorrhoid

I have suffered from both internal and external, but actually found it hard to find information on my internal piles

So let’s first talk about internal ones.

  • The internal seems to be the most common form.

  • They are swollen veins right up inside your rectum which will give you pain when you are having a bowel movement and may well bleed, causing blood in your poos (stools) or bleeding from your anus.

  • Can occur inside the anus and rectum, from where they can cause a lot of uneasiness and inflammation.

  • develop inside the anal canal.

  • can be in a form of prolapsed internal hemorrhoid.

  • originating above the junction, even if prolapsed, are still classified as internal, and are divided into 4 categories depending on the grade of prolapse:.

  • occur higher up in the anal canal than external and are not noticeable to the eye until they droop.

  • usually are not painful, but may bleed.

  • usually do not cause pain.

  • It is important to note that if an internal hemorrhoid is pushed through the anal opening due to straining, it can however lead to pain and irritation.
  • Sometimes, an internal hemorrhoid may stretch until it bulges outside the anus.

  • They are assessed and treated according to how bad they are. Surgeons generally classify the severity of internal hemorrhoids in four different grades:

  • First degree

  • Second degree

  • Third degree

  • Fourth degree

First-degree will usually occur in the anus, but will not move into any other area.

The third degree will move outside of the anus during bowel movement.

With the fourth degree, there will be a protrusion from the hemorrhoid. Internal Piles can be characterized by the discharge of dark blood.

They often trigger serious discomfort specifically throughout intestinal motion.

    Prolapsed Hemorrhoids:

A prolapsed hemorrhoid occurs when an internal hemorrhoid is forced or stretched until they are visible outside the anus. If your internal hemorrhoid is not seriously addressed, it can develop into an external one that will cause not just bleeding but pain.

Untreated internal hemorrhoids can lead to two severe forms: prolapsed and strangulated.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids are internal hemorrhoids that are so distended that they are pushed outside the anus.

Many people have a prolapsed hemorrhoid in conjunction with both internal and external hemorrhoids.

Prolapsed hemorrhoids basically represent a later stage in the development cycle of internal hemorrhoids.

Bleeding hemorrhoids are also a more severe form or stage of internal hemorrhoids characterized by profuse bleeding.

    External Hemorrhoid

photo of external hemorrhoid External hemorrhoids are the second type and are the most common and painful type.

They are a major source of worry to the sufferer since they cause extreme discomfort and pain upon coming in touch with any object.

    External hemorrhoids:

  • are swollen veins that can be seen and often felt under the skin outside the anal canal.

  • are found outside of the anus.

  • are formed when the veins around the anus get strained and swollen.

  • Unlike the internal kind, the external types will immediately show the signs and symptoms.

  • may be asymptomatic, associated with discomfort, or a cause of acute pain in the event of a thrombosis.

  • can cause itching, burning, and irritation.

  • can become very distressing when the blood in the external hemorrhoid clots and inflammation irritates the nearby, pain-sensitive skin.

  • are in an area where the nerve endings can actually feel pain, so this particular type of hemorrhoid is more painful.

  • When clothing comes in contact with the external hemorrhoids, the sufferer experiences a sharp burning pain.

  • When they worsen, they form clusters all around the anal canal.
